Nicholas Hovington is a proud Palawa man, a descendant of the Paredarerme people of south-east lutruwita/Tasmania and a contemporary artist currently living and working on Boon Wurrung Country in Naarm/Melbourne. Nicholas’s works span mixed-media, jewellery, sculpture and cultural objects including weaponry and body adornments. He is a master woodcarver, renowned for his coolamons, boondies (clubs), boomerangs and shields.
His cultural and creative practice is dedicated to researching and reviving traditional Tasmanian cultural objects and art forms. He sources all materials sustainably, gathering roadkill including bones, feathers, kangaroo teeth and sinew, echidna quills, river reeds and ochres during his trips on Country. These materials are used with various contemporary materials and techniques that attest to the ongoing connection to traditional practices, and their continuation and evolution.
His work is held in both private and public collections in Australia and internationally, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Koorie Heritage Trust, Melbourne, and British Museum, London.
